Communication Skills are Learned.
Itβs very true that as human beings we start communicating effectively at a very young age; we learn speech, language and use dialogue to send messages and receive them. This is good news! This gives people a base from which to build. Communication skills such as listening, asking great questions, & non verbal cues can be taught, learned, practiced and coached...just like any other skill set! I often think of the hours of practice and drills that firefighters use to enhance their efficiency and competence during actual fires. That's what the research in communication tells me; when we delineate the skills, practice them like skill drills, get coached and engage in opportunities to grow them, we get better.Β
